Razzle Dazzle Camouflage

ADDPMP020

Razzle dazzle camouflage is a type of ship camouflage that was used extensively during World War I. It consists of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colors. Razzle dazzle is reminiscent of a zebra’s pelt. However, Picasso claimed that cubist artists like himself had invented it. The technique is widely credited to the British marine artist Norman Wilkinson and was then adopted by the British and the United States Navy. Unlike other camouflage techniques, razzle dazzle intends not to conceal, but to confuse and mislead the enemy. The patterns make it difficult to estimate the ships range, speed, and heading. Each pattern was meant to be unique so as to avoid ships to be linked to each other by the enemy.
