Mandible

ADDPMP732

The word mandible derives from the Latin word mandibula, jawbone (literally “one used for chewing”). Sitting beneath the maxilla, the mandible forms the lower jaw (or jawbone) and holds the lower teeth in place. It is connected to the temporal bones by the temporomandibular joints and consists of two parts: the body, found at the front, and a ramus on the left and the right, meeting with the body at the angle of the mandible or the gonial angle. The mandible is the only movable bone of the skull (discounting the ossicles of the middle ear).
