Aerican Empire
ADDPMP579
A micronation, founded in May 1987 by a Canadian citizen, that has no sovereign territory of its own and has never been recognised by any other sovereign state as existing. The name Aerican Empire stems from the term “American Empire”; it is conventionally referred to in short form as Aerica.
Aerica’s members claim sovereignty over a vast disconnected territory, including a square kilometre (0.39 sq mile) of land in Australia, a small area in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a colony on Mars, the northern hemisphere of Pluto and an imaginary planet.
The flag is similar to that of Canada, with a yellow smiling face in place of the red maple leaf. The national motto of the Aerican Empire is: “The world is ridiculous; let’s keep it that way”. Aerica issues novelty passports, stamps, coins and banknotes.
In 2000, The New York Times described Aerica’s website as “one of the more imaginative” micronation sites.
