The Iranian composer Morteza Hannaneh (1923 - 1989) co-founded the Teheran Symphony Orchestra and the Farabi Orchestra. He was a pioneer in modern national music in Iran.
Tchashm-e-Del was released in 2017 on Collapsing Market label and found on a cassette tape at his grandson’s home in Paris a year before. No actual date of release was written on it, but it seems that it was recorded in the late 1960’s on Radio Teheran. The LP is an interesting example of crossbreeding between classic middle-eastern harmonies and western orchestration, with similar arrangements than in many French or Italian soundtracks of the late sixties golden era, but combined with the use of traditional Persian arrangements and voice techniques.
The musical piece goes along with a ghazal by Hatef Esfehani, a famous Iranian poet of the 18th century. It deals with the founding principles of Sufism, through a love story between Hatef and a Christian girl. The poetic form of the ghazal, with rhyming couplets and repetitions, explains the musical structures and leitmotivs in this work.
