A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from an object that originates in outer space such as a comet, asteroid or meteoroid and survives its passage through the atmosphere to reach the surface of a planet or moon. Because meteorites are so scarce, they are priced and sold by the gram.
Scarcity, availability, the size of the specimen and the amount and quality of preparation that went into the piece can all affect the price of a meteorite. Common iron meteorite prices are generally in the range of $0.50 to $5.00 per gram. Stone meteorites are much scarcer and priced in the $2.00 to $20.00 per gram range for the more common material. It is not unusual for me- teorites made of truly scarce material to exceed $1,000 per gram.
