Pavarotti in Hyde ParkADDPMP689
On July 30, 1991, Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti appeared in a free televised concert in London’s Hyde Park to celebrate his 30 years in opera. This concert drew a record attendance of 150,000 - twice the number of people that attended the Rolling Stones free concert in this park in 1969 - that stood under umbrellas, in the torrential rain. To enable fans farthest from the stage to see Pavarotti, organisers asked the crowd to close their umbrellas, even in the enclosed area in which the Royal couple was seated. After the 90 minutes of the concert, everyone was soaked, including Charles and Diana, Prince and Princess of Wales, who joined the tenor after the concert.
