Red-lipped batfish

ADDPMP649

A fish of unusual morphology, mainly known for its bright red lips, found in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean, mostly around the Galapagos Islands (hence the nickname Galapagos batfish) and off Peru, at depths of 3 to 76 metres (10 to 249 ft).

The red-lipped batfish, or Ogcocephalus darwini, can reaches up to 40cm (15.7in) in length. Its body color varies from dark brown to light grey, with white stripes underside. As its name of the fish states, the batfish has extremely bright, almost fluorescent, red lips. Marine biologists believe that they may be used to enhance species recognition during spawning. It is also believed that exposing their lips can attract sexual tension within the species.
