Animalia Paradoxa

ADDPMP582

The mythical or magical animals mentioned in editions 1 to 5 of the 18th-century Swedish botanist, zoologist and physician Carl Linnaeus’ seminal work, Systema Naturae. Under the heading Animalia Paradoxa, Linnaeus listed 14 taxa including fantastic creatures found in medieval bestiaries and some animals reported by explorers from abroad, explaining why they were excluded from the binomial nomenclature of Systema Naturae. According to Swedish historian Gunnar Broberg, it was to offer a natural explanation and demystify the world of superstition. Animalia Paradoxa was dropped from Linnaeus’ classification system as of the sixth edition (1748).
